Counting calories 01/01/2012

Picture

Calories (also known as kilojoules) are a measure of how much heat is released in our bodies when we convert food energy into our own energy.

1kg of body weight on the scales contains approximately 700g of fat. Each gram of fat is worth 9 calories.

If you want to lose 0.5kg to 1kg of excess body fat each week, you have to reduce your daily calories by 500 to 1000. That is 3500 to 7000 calories over the course of 1 week.

Dieters frequently underestimate how much they eat and overestimate how active they are. The only way to be sure is to keep a record.

The Art of Natural Slimming

You are Worthy of Love. Happiness and love do not come as a size dress or a weight on the scales.

Surround yourself with positive people who care for and support you.

No that does not mean you need to join a cultish weight loss program and spend half your life on a forum mixing with people who will give you hugs when you share your life problems, or praise you when you loose kilo.

By all means if you spend your working hours in a highly active job as a labourer then spending your spare time on line in forums may be beneficial to you. However chances are that the reason you are reading this is because you have not been eating as healthy as you would like to and have not been as active or exercised as much as your body needs in order to be as healthy as it can be.

Question:

What is the best use of my time now?

Your Answer:

………………………………………………………

I will allow you to fill in those blanks for yourself, as this is your life you want to improve.

My Answer

My reply is that I need to achieve and maintain sufficient motivation to stay focused on caring for my self.

I will best achieve this by mixing with positive life loving and achieving people. Not necessarily ones who are only interested in weight loss and body fitness.

Tip:

The art of natural slimming is more about what is going on in your mind outside or the focus on your weigh. That means you really can stop weighing yourself every day or even every week, if you choose. You really do not have to join a program and weigh in every week in order to be naturally healthy slim.

Warning:

Anyone can lose weight. Just dehydrate.

Your body is mainly composed of water. Water is as essential to your life as oxygen. In good health you can only live for three days without water. In sickness or infancy this might only be twenty-four hours. Dehydration will show as weight loss. This is not something to become elated about. Get off the scales, eat a balanced diet and drink more water.

Technical information:

Textbook of Medical Physiology states that "the total amount of water in a man of average weight (70 kilograms) is approximately 40 litres, averaging 57 percent of his total body weight.

In a newborn infant, this may be as high as 75 percent of the body weight, but it progressively decreases from birth to old age, most of the decrease occurring during the first 10 years of life. Also, obesity decreases the percentage of water in the body, sometimes to as low as 45 percent.

There is not, and cannot be, a figure that is exactly the same for all people. Jackson's (1985) Anatomy & Physiology for Nurses gives a figure of 60% for the proportion of body-weight attributable to water

Having a lovely start to the weekend

I watched trail running on TV - does that count as exercise?

I read some L.M.Montgomery, did some editing of my novel and I have written some blogs. And it is only midday :-)

WOW! Weekend off to a great start here.

‎I just read the first chapter of the wonderful classic "Anne of Green Gables" It broke so many editing 'rules.' Used words like 'little' and 'very' and two uses of 'very' in the one sentence....Editing Inspirations from Anne of green Gables. www.kathyshell.com_

Inexpencive Steak with Avocado Salsa 12/06/2011

Picture
_When Reg and I were touring Central Queensland this year we got a pleasant surprise to discover meat selling for as little as $4.99 a kilo. When we left Victoria the same quality meat was beginning to be priced around $29.95 and $32.95 a kilo and I had stopped eating it.

The only time I was eating meat was when the shops began the meat at a reasonable price and then held a half price special when the meat was near its use by date. At this stage I would buy and fill the freezer.

I have discovered that the IGA supermarket has a market day a little over once a month. At this time you can buy full bulk uncut rump steak at the $4.99 a kilo price and it is easy to carve your own steak and freeze them.  This makes eating steak as frequently as you would like to, as economical as eating baked beans. There is no nead to skimp on gourmet style foods if you learn where and when you can purchase at a good price, have a freezer to take advantage of the bulk buy, and don't mind a little preparation time.

Steak with avocado salsa
  • 40 Olive oil, 1 teaspoon(s)
  • 218 Beef fillet, lean, raw, 150 g
  • 3 Steak seasoning, 0.5 teaspoon(s)
  • 77 Avocado, 0.25 medium
  • 2 Coriander, 0.25 cup(s)
  • 4 Red onion, 1 medium slice(s), diced
  • 1 Lime juice, 2 teaspoon(s)
  • 2 Chilli powder, 0.25 teaspoon(s), or to taste
  • 83 Mixed vegetables, any type, cooked without oil, 2 cup(s), eg. carrots, beans, cauliflower
  • 136 Sweet potato, peeled, 1.5 cup(s), cooked without oil
  • 197 Mixed grain bread roll, 1 roll(s)
Preparation
  1. Coat the steak on both sides with the pepper seasoning and half a teaspoon of oil.
  2. Heat a non-stick pan or barbecue grill and cook the steaks for 2-3 minutes each side, or until cooked to your liking. Remove the steak and rest it in a warm area for 3 minutes.
  3. In a bowl, combine the avocado, chilli, red onion, coriander, lime juice and remaining oil. Mix well and serve with the rested steak, boiled vegetables and bread roll.

Treating People as you would like to be treated. 12/01/2011

Picture
"Do unto others as you would, have others do unto you. Live by this and life is good"

People respond well to the way you treat them.
This applies to customer service in particular. We always return to businesses that treat us with respect.
I asked for a constructive critique for one chapter in my novel from a trusted proof reader and she felt my characters had expressed things well and it wasn't too long, the two main questions I had.  This was a quieter chapter prior to a big action chapter.  It is great to get some feedback part way though the novel's editing.

I was trying to express without preaching, the  'situation' the mixed race children in my novel find themselves in, where everyone in some locations assumes they are going to be thieves.

I have seen it so often from QLD though to WA…you set up a sales display and the first thing you are told is 'don't let the half cast kids come into your shop they are all thieves.'
Well I always did allow everyone in and don't use that offensive directive term myself.  I invited all the children to  handle the best soft toys, was friendly to them…guess what..at the end of the say their mum and dads would eel happy coming back to my store and were often good customers.

I think in five years of trading though those areas I was shoplifted from once and had night time break and enters with valuables stolen, once from someone I didn't know and the other from a fellow store holder.   So I wanted to tell that experience in my novel somehow, try to put it right for those kids.  Yes of course many were making a game stealing from the stores but this was in retaliation, 'you treat me like I'm worthless and I'll show you what I think of you,' behaviour.
