·         “The Power of One has everything: suspense, the exotic, violence; mysticism, psychology and magic; schoolboy adventures, drama.”
–The New York Times

“Unabashedly uplifting . . . asserts forcefully what all of us would like to believe: that the individual, armed with the spirit of independence–‘the power of one’–can prevail.”
–Cleveland Plain Dealer

In 1939, as Hitler casts his enormous, cruel shadow across the world, the seeds of apartheid take root in South Africa. There, a boy called Peekay is born. His childhood is marked by humiliation and abandonment, yet he vows to survive and conceives heroic dreams–which are nothing compared to what life actually has in store for him. He embarks on an epic journey through a land of tribal superstition and modern prejudice where he will learn the power of words, the power to transform lives, and the power of one.

“Totally engrossing . . . [presents] the metamorphosis of a most remarkable young man and the almost spiritual influence he has on others . . . Peekay has both humor and a refreshingly earthy touch, and his adventures, at times, are hair-raising in their suspense.”
–Los Angeles Times Book Review

“Marvelous . . . It is the people of the sun-baked plains of Africa who tug at the heartstrings in this book. . . . [Bryce] Courtenay draws them all with a fierce and violent love.”
–The Washington Post Book World

“Impressive.”
–Newsday

“A compelling tale.”
–The Christian Science Monitor

·         Publishers Weekly

·         ``Episodic and bursting with incident, this sprawling memoir of an English boy's lonely childhood in South Africa during WW II pays moderate attention to questions of race but concerns itself primarily with epic melodrama,'' noted PW. (Apr.)

·         Biography

·         Bryce Courtenay was born in South Africa, is an Australian, and has
lived in Sydney for the major part of his life.

·        Bryce Courtenay has successfully self-published and self promoted his books. He always looks impeccably well groomed and is blessed, with a great crop of hair for a senior; he could easily be a model for hair loss products for men. His manner and presentation of himself at many public and press launches show that it is no accident that books become top sellers, it takes talent, business sense, PR ability and hard work and Brice Courtenay, certainly has applied all of these to his writing career.

I'd love this book for one reason only - I'm South African and it's the most human account of living under Apartheid that I have ever read...

I first encountered The Power of One when I bought it as a discounted DVD. The story has changed the way that I live my life and look at the world. I watch it occasionally when it's time for the reminder that I am meant for more than living a life of anonymity. I take a lot of long drives and would love to have the book to listen to as a sort of re-inspiration more often. Thanks for the opportunity. Beautiful artwork.

I lived in South Africa for eight years during the time of Apartheid and it saddened me greatly. My best friend was an African lady named Maudie, she took care of our house and daughter Clair whilst I worked... Maudie has a gentle soul the likes I have ever known. She is still my example of "The Power of One". Winning the audio version would be wonderful for me personally it would put me in touch with a lot of old feelings and memories and I could share the audio with the Westernport Stroke Recovery Group, many have lost their ability to read and we would be able to share the tapes.

I have heard alot of positives comments regarding this book but have never had the opportunity to read it.

Winning this audio book would give me the experience of "listening" to the story whilst driving and making my trip go quicker.

Just letting those who are still entering this, know that these competitions are never open for more than a few weeks at most before the winner is drawn. This competition was in July 2010 and obviously is not still running in March 2011.
Your comments are still most welcome.

Carol Willis from South Africa was the winner of the competition.
