Daylight saving ends this Sunday - change your smoke alarm battery 03/29/2010

Picture
Bush fire haze, fridge magnet, by Kathy Shell.
Notice to all Victorians - remember to move your clock back one hour and buy a new battery when you do the shopping this week as this is the time we are advised, to change the batteries in our fire alarms.
I was reminded of this because our fire alarm battery was getting low and the alarm was making warning beeps, or I might have forgotten, as I have not seen the usual reminders in the media, this year.
Victoria's period of daylight saving will end at 3.00 am Daylight Saving Time (EST) on Sunday 4 April 2010.

Victora's fire services are again calling on the public to change their smoke alarm batteries when they change their clocks at the end of daylight savings on 4 April 2010.

The Be alarmed! Change you smoke alarm battery campaign is an annual fire safety campaign promoting the importance of working smoke alarms.

Earth Hour, Economy Measures and Blowouts. 03/27/2010

I just worked through ‘earth hour’. I did not turn our only electrical appliances  we would normally be using, off.

Well I never have more than two lights on (usually only one) in the house or caravan ever. Easy to do when there are only two of us, not a large family.

If the TV is on, in our house, there is no other light on.

I use shade trees, drapes and strategically opened or shut windows and adding or removing clothing and I use a water cooler for climate control.

It has to extreme climate, for us to use electrically aided heating or cooling at our place.

Our Total Gas and electrical bill is under $30. for a month when we are at home and we use fuel in a silent generator, solar and gas when we travel in the bush and that would be about the same. Total costs under $400. a year.

But I do not 'do' winter, we travel north to avoid the cold and needing to run a heater all the time, not something you can do with a young family easily nor restrict the lighting as much as I can though solar units can easily run all lighting.

Our largest costs involve our Toyota Troop carrier Workmate, V8 Diesel, Land Cruiser.  This is a powerful vehicle that Reg and I, hope, will last us a lifetime, if we look after it. It is a fantastic dependable towing vehicle and I have a lot of cab space to work in, almost a room size section behind the driver’s seat, it is however one of the most expensive cars to get serviced and our last service costs were $1,200.aAnd I have been up for $1,150. Worth of tyres in the last couple of months, so that side of our lifestyle can be costly. Yet another auto insurance quote, arrived in the mail though I do not need to change, as we are gold card members with our current insurance company and get a great discount.

I have always been loyal and gone to regular Toyota service centres but my neighbour and a few others are advising me to go to a recommended independent mechanic, they say I will save money and not lose any quality of service.  I do not know, that is not an area I am expert in.

Any advise on lowering car and travel, service costs without sacrificing quality are welcomed as that is definitely my budget blow out area.

I have illustrated this post with some of my fridge magnets made from images of my art works.

Boronia Peak, our conquest tomorrow. 03/23/2010

Picture
Reg and I put indigo into the Stawell kennels again today so we could spend all day in the Grampians National Park.  We plan to do the same again tomorrow.

We are thinking about doing the Boronia Peak, climb/walk.  This is a steep medium difficult climb walk to a lookout. Reg and I have done this walk before when we were much younger. It will be another mini milestone as i recall the rather scary for me, steep winding narrow rock scramble to the top.  To do this walk, Follow the track from the car park across Fyans Creek footbridge and begin the steady climb though tall Messmate forest and native pines, along the Western slope of the Mt William range. A scramble up the rocky summit rewards you with superb views towards Lake Fyans in the east and over the Fyans Valley.   I remember that the views were spectacular. Once again i will be packing our nuts for lunch and taking plenty of water with us and heading out early before the day gets hot, to do this strenuous walk.

If you’re interested, take a look at my artslim blog for images of me climbing Hollow Mountain and Mt Zero. With a 1,200 calorie work out like that and sticking to portion controlled healthy eating I am not needing phentermine reviews,

I am right on target to keep on losing my goal weight loss of 3 kilos every four week, which on average I am achieving and intend to maintain until I am at goal weight.

I should mention that I am only focusing on weight loss, because i have a trainer who understands my need to maintain and develop muscle and bone density and she encourages healthy eating, I do not do 'diets', or weight loss at any cost.  That reminds me to head to bed now for a great night sleep and be ready for another big day and to remember to take my calcium before bed.

Hope your achieving your goals too. :-).  Wishing you all the best xxx.

I was morbidly obese, 51 kilo over my ideal weight range; because I led a sedentary lifestyle and I ate more calories than I burned. If all my relatives were morbidly obese too, it was not genetically predisposition to be that way, but because we all had a similar love of sedentary activity, including overeating.

Surely when one after another of our relatives, die young from lifestyle disease, it is time to wake up and see, it is not the genes that are killing us. It is the lifestyle choice.

Yes, I was just talking to myself.

I give myself many pep talks.

In fact pep talks, to myself are my one and only and best weight loss supplement, all the rest is happening through healthy portion controlled healthy eating and a planned exercise routine and more incidental exercise every day that I ever gave myself before, back when I made those excuses and just blamed my ‘genes’, for being obese.  I protested that, ‘I was trying to lose weight’.   Oh and I have to add, I ‘was trying’, and IE, WW and diets failed me, I did not fail them. Long term they were not the solutions I needed to lose weight and be able to hold it off.

Yes some people do have more difficulty than others in losing weight and yes genetics is a factor in this. It still comes down to energy in versus energy out equation and giving the body healthy food, drink and movement in the right quantity for it to be at its best and to seek expert advice and motivation to follow a healthy plan.  You do not put your car into amateurs to fix, why not go to specialists for your body? I am not taliking about diet sales people here. Anyone who wants to sell you easy weight loss, is just after your money, not your best interest.
YOU / I, can get the advice from the experts, but we have to do the work.
The only place that success comes before work, is in the dictionary.

Want to join me and lose weight but not sure where to start?

There is a Free program on the internet, ‘How to Measure Up’, I have always advised using an expert, accredited dietician and a physiotherapist or sports injury trained, fitness coach and I am currently a member of the Michelle Bridges, 12 week body transformation, just entering week 4 and I am learning, benefiting and loving it. I am happy to try to help if there is anything I can blog to help inspire others, check out my artslim.org website where most of my weight management writing is published.

Reg and I extended our stay at the Grampians Gardens Tourist Park for one more week as we love it here.  The emus came to visit us before our shopping trip and the galahs were waiting for us when we got back to the caravan.
Picture
Yesterday I was thrilled to hear and then see the rare, gang gang cockatoo.  The blue wren and a red bellied finch play in the tree near me while I write, they are almost too fast for me to photograph and the rosella abound in this area.

Picture
Mind you it was a culture shock trying to do one weeks food shopping at the little Halls Gap store, I only bought  a quarter of the items on my shopping list and it cost $150.

We came home and Reg cooked a roast beef and sweet potato, onion and potato roast, it was yummy as usual, Reg is a good roast cooker.

Picture
There are a few fellow caravaners here in the tourist park at the moment, they wander over to chat, share stories, asked why I am on the computer a lot and are interested in the fact that I blog about my travels and fitness journey and recommend web sites that they like to visit themselves. Today someone asked me if he could look up differin reviews on my computer. I didn’t mind, as long as it wasn’t a video link and I was present to check what he was accessing from my computer, I would never let my computer out of my sight, you never can be too careful with internet security.

When I travel with a lap top computer I always use a pasword on it and the bank I access has visual images to click on as well as a password, to access your on line banking, making it a lot safer than a password only access internet banking system. Don't ever do internet banking at an internet cafe where you have no knowledge of the security of the computer you are using.  Even relaxing amongst the bird life, it pays to be careful with on line security.

I have osteoporosis and as a result, I went straight to a bone health specialist, dietician, for advice.

I now understand a lot more about nutrition and understand about the pH balance of foods and its effects on the absorption of minerals into our bodies and I have since achieved my own bone health nutrition qualifications. In my opinion the food plan that Michelle Bridges, Crunch Time cookbook and 12 Week Body transformation, suggests, is a wonderful balance between the ideal healthy diet and one that is not too fanatical or extreme.  I am finding working with an on line trainer, to be one of the best fat burners, I have had, in a long whileJ and I am loving that the nutritional guidance and the exercise recommended by the 12WBT program is all in keeping with good bone health information.

It is interesting that in the US where women have about 1200 mg of calcium in their diet but eat a lot of animal products 50% of them by my age have osteoporosis.  In cultures where the calcium in the diet is only 600 mg a day and food is more plant based, with some animal product but not a lot, there is very little osteoporosis in the population.

Osteoporosis is sometimes, called the ‘slimmers disease’. All those high animal protein, low carbohydrate diets are raising the PH in our bodies and that forces the calcium we consume to be used mostly to try to maintain the correct pH balance in our blood and cells, and there just is not enough over to do the work of maintaining bone density.  In fact, if we eat too many acid forming foods and drinks we actually leach calcium from our bones,

You do not have to go to the extreme of being a total vegan to have a balanced pH, all things in moderation. The western diet had gone well past moderation, just Google the incidence of osteoporosis and you will see this. Then Google the relationship of pH balance in your diet and osteoporosis and you will see that no amount of popping vitamins and minerals will help if you do not eat a balanced diet of all food groups without an excess of one type of food. The average Western diet is not balanced it is animal products at the expense of non-refined carbohydrates.

Sorry for the waffle, but finding out I had a degree in nutrition and had never, been taught, a thing about pH and I ate what I thought was a healthy diet yet developed a deficiency disease, came as a whammy shock to me. I just feel passionately about this.

With my recent bone health knowledge, I believe Michelle Bridges has designed a balanced diet for her clients or I would not be using her 12WBT program. I have made a lifetime study of nutrition, though still not an expert. I believe the information about a balanced diet, should be being taught loud and clear to everyone.

It is not breast cancer or heart disease women should be fearing the most it is the one that gets most of us women and it’s the one most of us neglect protecting ourselves from, or think that taking a bit of calcium is all we have to do. If you don’t learn early enough, how to prevent it, osteoporosis is not going to give you the figure you want, and can result in slow painful degeneration and death from the non recovery from the broken hip, what finally ‘gets’, most women and those who suffer this earliest and worst are the ‘dieters’, who lose weight following the diet pushers rather than a sound nutrition plan.

Gawd, that sounded like a lecture :-(. I apologize for how heavy handed that sounds but I CARE about my fellow women and the bone health message has to be heard or more women will become slim at the expense, of having brittle bones and bulging bellies, as the gut pushes forward as your spine, shortens and you will do all this low carbohydrate,  high animal protein, slimming work and can end up with a worse figure, for it eventually.

Don’t believe me, then do some web searching, well away from those low carb diet sites though.

You might not like my post but I hope I shocked someone out of getting osteoporosis.
The images are of flower art works I painted and have turned into fridge magnets, which can,be ordered, leave a message for me here if interested.

I am three weeks in to, the Michelle Bridges, 12-week total body transformation and very pleased with the results I am getting.

I spent week one of it, at Tarra Valley, in Gippsland out of range of my Telstra wireless internet. I cooked some great healthy meals around the camp fire and began running along the road, in the parks and lifting weights beside the river, following the program as best I could, without being able, to log in to it.

Week two, was spent visiting family.  That was difficult; eating other peoples meals for a week and finding time to exercise while visiting others. My old bad habits of making excuses about why I cannot do the things I need to do to achieve my goals were happening again.  I did not enter this 12 week program and go perfectly 100%, I had a few slip ups during week two.

Not, my best start, in a new, fitness program.

Week three has been great, I filled the caravan and car fridge, with lots of healthy vegetables, lean meat, poultry and fish and headed for the Grampians, the lure of all those amazing walks, made me feel I could be at my very best and achieve a quick weight loss.

I thought I would start with the easy walks and work upward. Reg and I have had a wonderful time; the walking has increased in difficulty and I am striving toward a great result for my four week, one quarter into the program, weigh and measure, next Wednesday, mid week four.

I wish I could take the walks of the Grampians with me as my own private fitness gym. J when we move on to continue our tour of Australia. I know there will be many more beautiful places to inspire exercise, just as they have inspired my paintings in the past, but the Grampians, is Reg and my ‘special place’. J

The images are of Australian landscape art works I painted and have turned into fridge magnets, which can,be ordered, leave a message here and I will contact you.

Regeneration After Bushfire; Grampians Victoria. 03/15/2010

Picture
Picture
I have had two lovely days of bush walking in the Grampians in Victoria and while the official wild flower season is from winter to summer with springtime being the peak time, even now, in early autumn I am seeing a lot of wildflowers and an amazing amount of regeneration following the devastating bush fires in this area, in 2006.

Picture
The Grampians region is one of Australia’s richest and most diverse flora areas,  It is home to more than one third of the State’s flora with over 100o varieties of wildflowers, some exclusive to this area.  The photos are of a few that I saw today and they include the Grampians pink heath, and some everlastings and a Correa.

Picture
Here is a photo of an area on the slopes of Mt William, where I hope to go this week. This photo was taken, three weeks after the bush fires showing even the rocks split by the heat of the hot burn.

An area estimated to be roughly 50% of the entire Grampians National Park, essentially the entire eastern half, including a large area of mixed bush land and farmland on the flats around the eastern and north-eastern part of the ranges was burnt out.

Picture
The greatest joy is to see how well the forests are regenerating after the destruction in 2006.
Photos below were taken, today, on my walk in the Wonderland range, through an area, previously burnt out by fire.
